Musa Karademir, President of the BDU International Diplomats Association, made a press statement on the occasion of 9 May Europe Day. Karademir said: “ On May 9, 1950, when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman declared the need for a lasting peace in Europe, Europe had already paid the heavy price of the Second World War. This document, known as the “Schuma Declaration”, which brought Europe together in such a way that it would not fight again, was considered a beginning that would lay the foundation of the European Union and establish a set of values. For 73 years, the European Union (EU) has been changing and evolving. The EU, which has evolved from the Community of 6 to the Union of 27, is also striving to become a global player.
In its relations with the EU since the 1963 Ankara Treaty, Türkiye is today a country that has been granted candidate status for full membership and has been kept waiting at the door for decades. On 9 May Europe Day, Turkey-EU relations should be restored to order. After the May 14 elections in Turkey, it is imperative to normalize relations, regardless of who is the winner. Updating the Customs Union, reviving political relations, opening the door to free movement, the refugee issue and international terrorism are also among the urgent issues of cooperation. As the Republic of Turkey celebrates its Centennial, it certainly deserves the fundamental rights and freedoms of the European Union, democracy, the rule of law and the level of economic development. As our Republic enters its second century, it is its most natural right to become a global player. ”
